According to many studies, a healthy person has an average attention span of 20 minutes. The next time you find yourself distracted at work or in class, that’s why.
That doesn’t mean we have to leave it at that. There is no set method to improve your mind, and there is a lot of information that science is yet to find out about. There are some strategies that you can use.
1. Identify Your Goals
A quick question before we jump into the strategy itself. Do you know your goal, or are you stuck in a never-ending cycle of the same routine? If your answer to even one of those questions was yes, you don’t have a goal in mind.
Not having a purpose or goal means it’s easy to lose focus. Find a purpose, identify your goals, and focus on your passions to find what makes your clock tick.
1. Learn To Prioritize
You might have one big goal or many little ones, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you learn to prioritize them. Not every goal requires the same attention. Split your time as needed between them.
Luckily, it’s easy to do. Spend some time each morning deciding which tasks to accomplish. Assign highest to lowest priority to them and get right to it.
2. Remove the Distractions
What better way to lose focus than distractions all around you? Make it a practice to set up a schedule for activities. Put your phone away and get away from social media. Research has revealed that cognitive capacity improves when phones are away from us.
3. Learn the Right Way to Multitask
Doing multiple things at a time may make you feel you’re being more productive. The truth is you’re probably wasting more time. It is a recipe for poor attention and decreased mental focus. Excessive multitasking hampers your ability to focus.
4. Practice Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness can increase mental fitness, which will also improve your focus. When we practice mindfulness, it relaxes both the mind and body. People have practiced different forms of it for decades, but its many health benefits are only just being understood.
5. Take Short Breaks
This might seem counterintuitive, but it sometimes has the opposite effect when you concentrate too hard on something. Your mind wanders, and you’ll face problems in devoting yourself to your goals.
