After the crazy last years, everyone is excited to return to their normal routines, and that includes working out as well. The fitness industry is huge and valued at 96.7 billion USD. With the changes in the past years and new developments and research, there have been significant variations and trends in the fitness industry.

What was once jumping from one fad to another, the fitness industry is now focusing on highlighting the need to stay healthy. As such, these are the top fitness trends for 2022.

1. Calisthenics

Thanks to COVID-19, all the gyms shut down, and many were left scrambling on what to do for their workout. Being confined to a smaller space where we didn’t have the same equipment felt like all our hard work regarding fitness went down the drain. This is where people truly understood the benefits of calisthenics.

The last recorded number of people opting for calisthenics was 24.45 million. If you’ve ever seen pictures of people suspended horizontally from a monkey bar or in a flat position, that’s calisthenics. Well, that’s advanced calisthenics. Don’t let it put you off if you can achieve the same.

A calisthenics coach and expert will tell you there are various levels to it. You can use basic exercises as a foundation to work towards advanced moves. It’s all about using basic and advanced exercises to create a strong core and a defined body.

2. Hormone Balancing

Men and women have the same number of hormones; hormone-related issues are more common in women than men. Did you know that around 80% of women have hormonal imbalances in their bodies? A lot of time, they go about their daily lives without even realizing its impact. Fitness pros are now focusing more on creating workouts to balance the hormones.

Gentle exercises like yoga or Pilates can ease cramps and other menstruation symptoms. Once your periods are over, you might be feeling full of energy; this is the time to get into more high-intensity workouts. Similarly, during ovulation, you’ll also feel more energetic; take advantage of circuit training for increased energy.

3. Canicross

The quarantine was a stressful time for many, especially people who lived alone. This led to nearly 23 million people adopting dogs during this time. Now that people have puppers that have become an irreplaceable part of their lives, they’re also looking for ways to involve them in things they enjoy, like a workout. Enter: canicross.

Canicross is going on a run with your dog, and it’s a great way to get some exercise in for you and your four-legged friend. Remember to get a stretchy leash and the correct harness when doing canicross. There are many available only, so make sure to do your research. Using the incorrect harness and leash can injure your dog and even you.

4. Fitness-Tech

It seems like there’s a new addition to wearable fitness technology every day. Technology has started to become indispensable. What started as simple step trackers have evolved into something that can analyze your whole workout routine and tell you how to improve your performance.

The latest technology now has VR and AI options as well, making fitness even more fun. You can now have a multi-dimensional experience while you achieve your fitness goals. The added benefit, if you’ve had trouble getting interested in fitness before, you can modify it to fit your tastes better.

5. High-Intensity Interval Training

HIIT has been very popular for years. It’s a combination of high-intensity and low-intensity intervals. The former increases the heart rate by 70% to 90%, putting pressure on the cardiovascular system. You’ll be breathing fast and sweating a lot, but we can’t ignore the many benefits of HIIT.

If you enjoy going to the gym, you might have already seen many people doing it. After all, it’s an excellent way to burn calories fast in a shorter time which is why busy people love it. If you’re interested in trying out a new workout class that doesn’t take up excess time like others, keep it on your to-do list.

6. Outdoor Exercises

While there was a shift during the pandemic in how people exercised and thought they needed gyms, there was also a newfound appreciation of the outdoors. Of course, the introverts might have rejoiced initially, but being stuck inside got old really fast.

According to research, outdoor exercises significantly reduce anxiety and depression symptoms and contribute to a person’s wellbeing. Moreover, this research also found that the more one is exposed to nature, the better understanding and appreciation one has for community and belonging.

For 2022, we’re seeing a lot of people filling up parks and green areas to take in the sunshine and get their workout in. Calisthenics is already in this year, but a desire to be outside will lead to a bigger boom in its popularity since it doesn’t need equipment and can be done anywhere.
